Rose Street
Unfortunately, the short and narrow Rožu (Rose) Street, formerly known as Rosengaße, which once connected Atmodas (Awakening) Street with Jāņa (John) Street opposite Tebras Street, has disappeared into the landscape of Aizpute.
There was only one small built-up plot of land on Rožu Street itself (behind the street turn shown in the photo on the left side), which belonged to Hillelsohn at the time the photo was taken. The other buildings enclosing these streets were located on the plots of Jāņa (John’s) and Atmodas (Awakening) Streets. Here, the building on the left side of the photo were stables built by merchants Michelsohn in 1860 at № 1 Atmodas (Awakening) Street. Their 117-foot (35.66 m) long outer wall stretched halfway down the street. On the right side, behind the fence, the barn of the Aizpute Branch of the Bank of Latvia can be seen on the plot of land belonging to the bank at № 5 Atmodas Street, while the low wooden residential building was located on the plot of land of Hirsch Aronsohn at № 3 Jāņa Street. At this building, Rožu Street turned left, and it reached Jāņa (John’s) Street between houses № 5 and № 7.
